Abstract

Microfinance has become an important instrument of financial inclusion and rural livelihood development in India. It provides low-income households with access to credit, savings and other financial services that may support income-generating activities. The importance of microfinance is particularly relevant in Uttarakhand, where rural households face challenges associated with limited employment opportunities, small-scale agriculture, geographical constraints and migration. This study assesses the impact of microfinance on poverty reduction and socio-economic development among rural households, using Dehradun as the principal reference area.

The study examines the relationship between microfinance participation and household income, savings, productive investment, employment, livelihood diversification and economic security. A descriptive and empirical research framework is adopted using household-level indicators supported by relevant secondary information. The study considers Self-Help Groups, microcredit, savings and productive loan utilization as important components of microfinance participation. The analysis suggests that microfinance can contribute to poverty reduction when credit is invested in productive activities and supported by financial literacy, skills and market access. However, credit alone cannot ensure sustainable development. Poor utilization of loans, repayment pressure and inadequate market opportunities can reduce its effectiveness. The study concludes that microfinance should be integrated with broader livelihood-development initiatives to achieve sustainable socio-economic improvement in rural Uttarakhand.
